29. November, 2024 | Braunschweig, Germany

From 27. – 29. November 2024, the International Battery Production Conference (IBPC) took place in Braunschweig, Germany. Representing the greenSPEED project, Shiho Honda from FZJ delivered a presentation on “Achieving Stable Cycling Performance of Pure Silicon Anode for LIB by Scalable Electrochemical Pre-Lithiation.”

Her presentation highlighted advancements in silicon anode technology, offering insights into how scalable pre-lithiation methods can improve the stability and performance of lithium-ion batteries. She also introduced challenges of the pre-lithiation for Pure Silicon Anodes and showed experimental results of coin and pouch cells. Shiho concluded by highlighting the sensitivity of pre-lithiated silicon anodes to oxygen and moisture and the challenges posed by silicon’s brittleness at larger scales. Despite these hurdles, promising results from coin and pouch cells indicate the potential for transitioning to pilot-scale production, with ongoing work focused on optimising pre-lithiation processes and exploring industrial applications through greenSPEED.

What did you like the most about presenting at IBPC 2024?

The conference is well integrated with industry and academic institutions. After my presentation, I had great discussions with other attendees.

What excites you most about your work with greenSPEED?

Our electrochemical pre-lithiation methods work well with both dry and wet coating of the Si-based anodes we are working on in the greenSPEED project. I look forward to reporting our achievements with the roll-to-roll process by the end of our greenSPEED project!
